Portable Bluetooth Speakers - Benefits and Uses

Portable Bluetooth speakers make it effortlessly easy to listen to your favorite music on the go. Working on the same technology (Bluetooth) that allows you to send and receive files and data on your cellphone wirelessly, these portable Bluetooth speakers are easy to use, easy to set up, lightweight, and perfect for anyone who likes to carry his music with him.
I can think of dozens of scenarios where a set of portable Bluetooth speakers would be handy. Recently, on a picnic with friends, I found myself craving some good music. While I had plenty of songs in my iPod, I could listen to them only through my headphones. But at that moment, I wanted music to be a shared experience, to listen to it along with all my friends. In such a scenario, a set of battery powered portable Bluetooth speakers would have been very handy. Just plug it in into your iPod, and enjoy your favorite tunes with friends or a loved one.
And really, that is the primary job of these portable speakers: to make music more social. In terms of portability, nothing can beat a pair of earphones. But if you want to share the music experience with others, you will need to invest in a set of Bluetooth speakers. Imagine camping with a loved one, lying under the stars, and listening to your favorite tunes. This is possible only with portable Bluetooth speakers.
Let me forewarn you though that you should not expect the same performance from a set of Bluetooth speakers as you would from a regular 2.1 speaker system. These speakers are underpowered and lightweight. Their motto is portability, not large sound. Although some speakers, especially those by Bose and Altec Lansing deliver crystal clear and lucid sound, you can't expect to go too high in terms of volume. If you are expecting these speakers to play music for a party of 20 people outdoors, you may have to look for alternative arrangements.
In terms of price, portable speakers are slightly more expensive than standard speakers. Typically, the work through USB or single pin adapters. Major brands are Logitech, Altec Lansing, Creative, and Bose. Many speakers are designed specifically to work with an iPod and have special docks to play from the iPod directly, without any cables. If you are a heavy iPod user, you should look to buy one of these.
You can also buy desktop speakers which sacrifice portability for better, bigger sound. These are like any regular speakers, except that they work through USB.
Portable Bluetooth speakers are great for bringing your music with you, wherever you go. They make music a 'shared' experience. If you are a music aficionado, these should be pretty high on your purchase list.

Bluetooth Speakers - Advantages and Disadvantages

Bluetooth speakers are the latest advancements in the wireless world. Working on the same Bluetooth technology that allows you to share music and files on your mobile phone wirelessly with friends, these speakers provide a high quality listening experience without using any wires. As far as wireless technologies go, Bluetooth is still in its nascent stages, but nevertheless, offers a compelling performance.
If you own a cell phone, you've probably used Bluetooth already. Nowadays, you can buy everything from earphones and headphones to headsets that run on this technology. Many modern laptops and netbooks also utilize Bluetooth to connect devices wirelessly, including speakers, headphones and small printers.
The two common technologies most prevalent in wireless speakers are RF (radio frequency) and Infra-Red. While both have their own merits, their functionality is somewhat limited. Radio Frequency, for instance, can sometimes suffer from interference and reception issues, while Infra-Red requires the device and the receiver to be in-line with each other, thereby limiting portability.
Bluetooth speakers, on the other hand, can work without any spatial restrictions as long as the speakers and the receiver are within 30 feet of each other. You need not fiddle around with any settings; the connection can be established wirelessly between the receiver and the Bluetooth speakers.
Advantages of Bluetooth Speakers
- Bluetooth speakers generally consume very low power. More often than not, you don't need a hefty external power adapter to keep them running. In fact, many popular models run on AA batteries.
- One major advantage of Bluetooth speakers is portability. Many people use them like headphones or earphones, carrying a small pair of speakers in their laptop bags to be used outdoors. Their low power consumption makes them an ideal choice for such use.
- Since these speakers work without wires, you will never have to fiddle with cumbersome cables and adapters.
- No installation. The connection between the speakers and the device (cell phone, laptop, etc.) can be established automatically. You need not hunt for drivers or installation CDs.
- Perfect for personal outdoor use. If you are out on a camping trip, or spending some time with friends on a picnic, you'll find Bluetooth speakers very handy. Since there is no installation required, you can set up and start listening to music within minutes.
- Work with cell phones, iPhones, etc. The great thing about Bluetooth speakers is that they work seamlessly with cell phones. While other wireless speakers employ RF or infra-red - features that few cell phones have - Bluetooth is ubiquitous in mobile phones. And since most modern day phones already have music playing capabilities, you can listen to your favorite music instantly.
Disadvantages of Bluetooth Speakers
- Range. The device (i.e. music player, cell phone, laptop, etc.) and the speakers need to be within 30 feet of each other to function. This means that you will find it hard to play music while sitting in another room.
- Power. Bluetooth speakers cannot compete with regular speakers when it comes to delivering raw power (i.e. wattage). Their sound will be weaker, lacking the richness and depth of regular speakers.
- Compatibility. While most cell phones are Bluetooth capable, many music players are not.
Conclusion
Bluetooth speakers are perfect if you want to listen to music while outdoors. If you want to catch up on your favorite songs while on a picnic, in a park, or on a camping trip, these are ideal investments. However, for home use, you may want to look at other wireless speakers that can deliver more power and better sound quality.

Wireless PC Speakers

If you own a computer, then you already know that there are a lot of wires involved. That is why it is good to go wireless whenever you can in order to avoid the plethora of cords from becoming tangled underneath or behind your computer desk. One of those ways in which you can begin eliminating the cords is through wireless PC speakers.
Wireless PC speakers allow you to place your speakers anywhere in the room with you. There are usually a number of speakers that come with the wireless system and each one has positioning specifications. One may need to be in the front of the room while others may need to reside in the front and rear corners. It is easy to compare wireless PC speakers to surround sound speakers since that is kind of like what you're getting... surround sound.
There are many different types of wireless PC speakers. These different types are distinguishable based upon the number of speakers that are included with the package. For example: The 7.1 wireless PC speakers include six speakers in all with a subwoofer and a center speaker. These are great for playing games, listening to music, and watching movies on your PC. There is also a 5.1 system that has four speakers, a center speaker, and a subwoofer. This type of system is great for those applications that don't require high powered sound. Finally, there is the basic 2.1 system, which includes only two speakers and a center speaker.
The very first thing you need to look at when choosing wireless PC speakers is to make sure the speakers you are interested in are compatible with your PC. You have to make sure that your computer supports wireless devices. Also, it is better to try finding a system that runs on Bluetooth so that any furniture or walls don't get in the way of the signal.
You'll find that your wireless PC speakers have great sound and that you can literally surround yourself with your favorite music or the sounds of that heavily anticipated movie. You'll probably feel like you are actually inside of the computer. Once you experience wireless PC speakers, you'll never go back to regular wired speakers ever again.
Just make sure that you check compatibility and that you go with the wireless PC speakers that will meet your particular needs. You don't want to overdo it, but you don't want to not use speakers that are not efficient enough. With the right speakers, your computer experience can be something entirely extraordinary.

Bluetooth Speaker for Car - Bypass the Phone and the Headset, Receive Calls Directly in Your Car! sss

Most modern day cars already have some form of Bluetooth integration. What this means is that instead of strapping on an earphone, you can receive and make calls using the car Bluetooth speaker. But in case your car is slightly older or doesn't have an in-built Bluetooth, you can always invest in a Bluetooth speaker for car that will free your hands and help you concentrate more on the road, less on the phone. s
Here's how this works: if you get a call on your cellphone, you can use your Bluetooth headset to answer it. This is comparatively less distracting than answering a phone directly. But a lot of people either don't like using headsets, or find that it distracts them from driving. Consequently, most modern cars come equipped with car Bluetooth speakers. These are typically built into the steering wheel. When you receive a call, you can either press a button (located on the steering wheel), or use a voice command to answer or reject it. This frees your hands completely, and distracts you even less from driving than a standard headset.
If your car doesn't already have Bluetooth integration, you can buy these speakers separately and hook them up to your steering wheel. Most of these speakers will feature a microphone and a speaker (for calls), a LCD display (to show you who is calling), a SD port (to save MP3s) and a USB port (for storing anything else). A Bluetooth speaker for car can also double up as an MP3 player or USB drive. Some also have a FM transmitter built in.
Many Bluetooth speakers for cars are battery operated, while others depend on a power source (typically the car's cigarette lighter). The latter is not a highly recommended option since you will essentially be tethering your steering wheel with a wire, which, despite whatever precautions you may take, is definitely a safety hazard.
If you are the busy professional who can't afford to miss out on calls when on the road, investing in a Bluetooth speaker for car should be a priority. It significantly reduces the risk of accidents and makes for a far smoother and seamless experience. No more fiddling around with headsets and cellphones; simply speak directly into the steering wheel to answer calls. Plus, your speakers can double up as a USB drive, a MP3 player, and a FM transmitter as well. If that isn't high-tech, then I don't know what is.
Motorola's T505 ROKR Bluetooth in-car speaker comes highly recommended. It has everything you would want in a Bluetooth speaker for car. It fits right on to your steering wheel and lets you make and receive calls directly. It announces the name of the caller, features a full-fledged FM transmitter that announces the name of the station, is rechargeable (can be charged in the car itself), and also includes a MP3 player. Another device to consider is the Jabra S500, which is a cheaper alternative to the Motorola T505.

Best Bluetooth Speakers in 2011 s

Another year, and another range of speakers released by a slew of manufacturers. But there's a difference this year: namely, the extensive line up of bluetooth speakers. While true audiophiles will probably shriek in horror at the mere mention of wireless speakers (wires, after all, do deliver better performance, even if you can't spot it), for most consumers, these wireless speakers - particularly bluetooth speakers - are more than good enough to replace the old, cumbersome, wired lot. Add to that the ubiquity of iPhones and iPod Touches, and you can see the appeal in bluetooth speakers: they are easy to use, affordable, compact, and deliver a decent overall performance without any of the nasty bits (read: wires, hefty power bricks, etc.).
So, which are the best Bluetoot speakers for 2011?
If I had to pick out one set of speakers that stand out for their versitility, I would probably choose the Creative D100 and its elder sibling, the D200. These two speakers do everything right for me: deliver a good performance, aren't too expensive (I say this after burning thousands of dollars on various speaker sets), and look good. But for the sake of this article, I will list out the four best Bluetooth speakers in 2011:
1. Creative D100 Wireless Bluetooth Speaker
As I've mentioned above, this speaker set does a lot of things right: good looks (it comes in five different colors, though I prefer the default black), delivers a more than adequate performance, is small and easy to carry, works on AA batteries, and won't burn a hole in your wallet.
But it isn't a perfect speaker. Not by a long stretch (for that, I would probably look at Klipsch or Bose). The low end lacks a bit of punch, and if you turn up the volume, there is distortion. I assume, however, that you won't be using the Creative D100 to power your next house party. For every other purpose, this is a great, dependable speaker.
Pros: compact design, affordable, aesthetically pleasing, strong overall performance.
Cons: Bass sounds a bit weak; distortions at high volume
2. Monster ClarityHD Precision Micro Bluetooth Speaker
With this speaker, there was love at first sight. How can you not fall for this tiny package bursting with features and power? It is no bigger than an iPhone in length, and yet, can set the house on fire with its sound. I've seen speakers that weight 10 lbs that don't perform as good.
Compact design notwithstanding, the Monster ClarityHD is a very well rounded speaker that works seamlessly with any Bluetooth device. Your iPhone or iPodTouch will recognize it instantly and stream all music through it. The audio quality is amazing for such a small speaker - clear, strong mid and high tones, little distortion, even at high volumes. If you listen to music largely through your smartphone (Android/iPhone/Blackberry) or iPod Touch, this speaker is the perfect choice.
Pros: Extremely compact design, clear, strong playback, decent range.
Cons: As with all small speakers, lacks strong low tones. Volume output is somewhat low.
3. Altec Lansing inMotion Soundblade Bluetooth Speaker
Finally, a speaker that dispels the myth that Bluetooth speakers are only good for casual users. It costs a pretty penny, but turn it on, and you will get crystal clear sound with amazing bass (thanks to SRS TruBass technology) that will blow your socks off. It looks classy, is just an inch thick, and even includes an in-built microphone to act as a speakerphone.
Being a modern Bluetooth device, the Altec Lansing inMotion is a breeze to setup. You can go from opening the package to streaming music through your iPhone in as little as 60 seconds. The performance is, quite frankly, mindblowing. It delivers sound that can compete with a $400 Bose system, and for all practical purposes, it is more than adequate for some heavy use, both in the house and beyond.
The only downside that I can think of (which has made me rank it here at no.3) is the price. At $199.99, it costs as much as a new Netbook computer. But if you care about quality, you will love the Altec Lansing Soundblade.
Pros: Excellent audio quality, aesthetically pleasing, just an inch thick, strong bass and clear high tones. Probably the best Bluetooth speaker around.
Cons: Expensive
4. SuperTooth Disco Bluetooth Speaker
It looks like a brick, is almost a footlong, and doesn't quite have the pedigree of an Altec Lansing behind it. But turn it on, and the SuperTooth Disco can give even a $300 Klipsch speaker a run for its money. The audio is surprisingly clear with strong volume output. Pairing it with a Bluetooth device is a matter of seconds, and it has a great Bluetooth range to boot.
On the downside, the large size makes it a bit difficult to carry around. While the Monster ClarityHD can be dropped into a handbag, the SuperTooth Disco does lack a bit of teeth in the portability department. But if you want to use it primarily indoors, you will be very happy with the performance.
Pros: Strong performance, good Bluetooth range
Cons: Big and unwieldy design

Creative D200 Wireless Bluetooth Speakers Review

I've been gushing about the Creative D200 for quite some time now on this site and it is only appropriate that I do a complete, in-depth review of these excellent Bluetooth speakers. Since I've already devoted plenty of reams to its smaller sibling - the D100, I'll ignore it for now and focus entirely on the D200, which is among Creative's best offerings in the wireless speaker space.
Creative D200 Wireless Bluetooth Speakers Review - Design
Housed in a single, 19" long, sleek black case, the Creative D200 can certainly be given some points for its rather futuristic looks. At just 4.6lbs, this is a rather fleet footed Bluetooth speaker that is easy to toss into a car on a camping trip. Don't mistake it for one of those 'pocket' speakers (a la Monster ClarityHD or Soundmatters foxLv2) though, measuring 18.8 x 4.9 x 5.1 inches.
All in all, the Creative D200 won't stand out or draw attention to your home, but its clean lines will blend in perfectly with your home décor. And as they say, a good pair of speakers should rather be heard than be seen...
Creative D200 Wireless Bluetooth Speakers Review - Setup
The Creative D200 deserves full marks on this scale, since setting up the speakers is - to use a cliché - a breeze, provided you own a Bluetooth capable audio player. The speakers instantly recognize any Bluetooth enabled device and stream music within seconds. Perfect if you want to use these speakers with your iPhone or other Bluetooth capable phone/music player.
If you don't own a Bluetooth capable audio player, however, you can either use the built-in AUX port, or even shell out extra cash for a wireless Bluetooth adapter. The former, despite being more cost-effective, kills the entire purpose of using these speakers (wires!). The latter will set you back by almost $40, but is well worth the price if you plan to use a non-Bluetooth device as your primary music player.
Creative D200 Wireless Bluetooth Speakers Review - Sound
This is the most important battleground, the fields where speakers are vanquished or crowned kings and emperors. What good is a speaker, after all, if it can't deliver pitch perfect audio, handle heavy bass, and deliver thick mid-tones without flailing (and failing)?
The younger sibling - Creative D100 - has certain issues with bass heavy songs and doesn't handle high tunes quite so effortlessly. Fortunately, the D200 doesn't suffer from the same issues and delivers rich, deep bass and quite clear high tones. We hooked up our iPhone Touch filled with 32GB of music, and threw everything from Enrico Morricone and the Kill Bill soundtrack to Justin Bieber and Danger Mouse's 'Grey Album' at it. We tried some Pavarotti, and even some Indian classical sitar music by Pandit Ravi Shankar.
The results?
Justin Beiber and his ilk would be quite happy. Regular pop doesn't really stretch the speakers and the D200 delivered a great performance. The Kill Bill soundtrack was rendered with admirable precision as well - not quite as good as our $600 Bose speakers, but impressive nonetheless.
Pavarotti caused some problems, and the humming of the classical Indian sitar wasn't quite clear at times. But these were more or less isolated cases and for regular use, the sound is more than adequately powerful and clear.
Creative D200 Wireless Bluetooth Speakers Review - Conclusion
At just around $100, the Creative D200 Bluetooth speakers are certainly very affordable. Despite the light weight, these speakers aren't very portable on account of their large footprint. The design is clean and classic and will look good in any living room.
The sound quality is solid, nothing more, nothing less. You won't be blown away, but you wouldn't want to climb into a corner with your ears stuffed with cotton wool either.
Overall, for the price, these are a very 'sensible' pair of speakers (a word we don't use very often). Setup is easy and the sound quality is above average. For $107, you'll be hard pressed to find a more well-rounded set of wireless Bluetooth speakers than the Creative D200.

Solar Powered Bluetooth Speakers

Did you even know they made solar powered blue tooth speakers? Well I didn't until I ran across some recently. I always love to check out new iPhone accessories and especially any wireless accessories that are coming out. I love to let my phone set on the desk, on the dashboard of my car or in my pocket and still be able to listen to music and take calls on my phone. So these new blue tooth speakers really caught my eye and then I found out they don't even need a charger to run!
There are so many speaker sets for cell phones these days it seems ridiculous, now when you are talking about iPhone accessories, well there are even more. In most cases the portable speakers are compatible with multiple phones or at least any phone that has a standard output mini jack. Howver, if you own an iPhone 3g or iPhone 3gs you know how finicky the blue tooth can be. I don't know why apple has not fixed the bluetooth issue in a firmware upgrade yet, but they have not.
The good news about the newest models of bluetooth speakers and even the special solar powered speakers, is that they all work with the iPhone. There are still one or two bluetooth 2.0 devices that are not compatible, but for the most part you should be OK with all the new iPhone speakers coming out.
I love to use the bluetooth speakers for my iPhone while I am camping. I love the outdoors and unfortunately the little iPhone speaker does not do to well in the great outdoors. Inside, I can deal with the built in iPhone speaker, but while I am by the fire and kicking back a cold one, there is nothing better than having your tunes within a fingers reach. Of course you can get the speakers that are wired, but it is really nice to be able to set your speakers on the picnic table and use your iPhone like a remote to the solar powered blue tooth speaker system. This is a really cool way to keep the tunes coming!
If you love being outside as much as I do, I highly suggest you look into finding some bluetooth speakers to rock your phone while you are outside as well. If you don't like bringing a boat load of batteries with you, the solar powered iPhone speakers may be the set for you!

How to Connect Your iPod Touch to Bluetooth Speakers

Support for Bluetooth speakers on the iPod touch is now a reality. When released the second generation of Apple's iPod touch platform replaced the Wi-Fi chip used with one that supports Bluetooth. Out of the box Apple did not enable Bluetooth. With the release of OS version 3.0 the Bluetooth chip has been enabled for pairing with Bluetooth speakers or headphones.
The second generation of iPod Touch was released September 9, 2009. The second generation iPod touch's came with OS Version 2.1.1 originally. Currently the latest released OS is version 3.1.2. For a small fee (currently about five dollars) you can upgrade your touch to the latest and greatest OS release. Along with many other features the latest release includes the Bluetooth A2DP profile (The Advanced Audio Distribution Profile is a Bluetooth profile that allows for the wireless transmission of stereo audio.) to be enabled.
There are a few things to verify before attempting to connect to your Bluetooth wireless speaker or headphones. First check your serial number and the apple website to verify that you do actually have a second generation or newer touch. Once you have verified that you have the required hardware, verify that your software version is correct. To determine your software version first tap the settings icon, then tap general, then tab about to see the version number. You need at least version 3.0 to be able to be able to connect to Bluetooth stereo speakers. If you are not at the very latest version I would strongly recommend that you upgrade to version 3.1.2 (at the time of this writing this is the latest version and can be purchased from iTunes for about 5 dollars).
Once you have determined that your iPod is capable and has the appropriate software it is time to pair with your Bluetooth wireless speaker. Follow the instructions that came with the headset or car kit to make it discoverable or to set it to search for other Bluetooth devices. This may involve entering a passkey or PIN number. Choose Settings > General > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on. The touch will begin searching for nearby Bluetooth devices. Choose the wireless Bluetooth speaker. The touch may prompt you to enter a passkey or PIN number. The instructions that came with your wireless speakers should contain this information.
Connecting to your wireless speakers from a touch is now very easy. Just make sure that you have a second generation or newer touch. Be sure to get the latest version of the OS. Turn on Bluetooth and search for your speakers or headphones. You will be enjoying your new wireless freedom in no time at all.

Best Bluetooth Speakers - Top 5 Bluetooth Speakers for Every Need

Bluetooth speakers are the latest innovation in wireless sound technology. While this technology is still in its nascent stages, it has already shown a lot of promise. If you own a bluetooth enabled phone, you've already seen this technology in action as it allows wireless transfer of data between two phones remotely. The same principles work with bluetooth speakers. In this article, I will talk about some of the best bluetooth speakers available and their salient features.
Bluetooth speakers are generally used as 'replacement' speakers. Currently, they do not have the power to replace a set of 5.1 surround sound system, or enough bass to liven up a big house party. Nevertheless, what they lack in power, they more than make up for in portability. Because they are wireless and relatively small in size, you can carry them around anywhere. In fact, a lot of manufacturers make speakers designed specifically for use with laptops that you can just toss into your laptop bag.
Some of the best bluetooth speakers are made by major electronics manufacturers, namely Sony, Samsung, Philips, etc. Bose, Altec Lansing and JBL - three important speaker manufacturers have an extensive lineup as well. Prices can range from less than $50 for a set of cheap, lightweight set to $400+ for a high quality Bose speaker system.
The first step to picking the best bluetooth speakers is understanding your own needs. If you just want a set of cheap, lightweight speakers you can use with your laptop, then an entry level Samsung or Logitech set would serve you well. But if you want something that you can lug around in your car, on picnics, and which can also serve as a desktop speaker replacement, you will have to shell out a few hundred dollars.
Some of the best bluetooth speakers available in the market today are:
1. Tenqa SP-109
This is an entry level offering from Tenqa that delivers 5 watts of stereo sound. It is small, lightweight, and is great for use with iPods and mobile phones. Just don't expect it to bring down the house with its volume. Prices start as low as $44.90
2. Altec Lansing inMotion SoundBlade Bluetooth A2DP Speaker
This offering from Altec Lansing delivers clear, high quality audio without compromising on portability. It connects automatically to your mobile phone or bluetooth enabled device. Small and lightweight, this mid-range bluetooth speaker delivers a great performance. Prices start at $149.
3. Sony SRS-BTM30
An entry level offering from Sony, the SRS-BTM30 runs on 3 AA batteries and doesn't compromise on quality. The two speakers work on bluetooth, and weigh in at just 1.6lbs. Prices start as low as $69.
4. Creative D100
This Creative offering weighs in at just 2.2lbs and works on 4 AA batteries that can play non-stop for 25 hours straight. It is compatible with all bluetooth enabled devices. The sound quality is uniformly high. Prices start at $76.
5. Bose SoundDock 10 Digital Music System
This Bose system is probably the best set of bluetooth speakers that you can buy. It is compatible with not just your bluetooth enabled devices, but also older iPod models. Like the various other offerings from Bose, this speaker system too offers almost life-like sound. If you have the extra cash and want a high quality speaker set that will make guests green with envy, the SoundDock 10 is the system for you. The price, however, is a hefty $599, though it is worth each and every cent.
