Boat Lights: LED, Versus Halogen, Versus HID

LEDs have generated a lot of interest among boaters over the last several years due to their high efficiency, powerful output, and unheard of longevity. Although early LED offerings were lacking in light quality and lumen output, rapid advancements in LED lighting technology have for all intents brought LEDs up to par and now they are considered a superior alternative to almost every other type of light source. This is not to say that traditional light sources are no longer worth consideration, but as LEDs continue to increase in quality and output, justifying the use of other lighting designs is becoming harder and harder to do. To see just how effective LEDs have become, let's take some time to compare some performance averages across the three main types of standard boat light types.
Halogen-
Halogens have been a longtime favorite among boaters due to their good power and affordable purchase price. There is often some confusion as to whether or not a halogen bulb qualifies as an incandescent light source, but the basic design is the same, only halogens contain added halogen and or bromine gases. The addition of these gases causes a reaction with the tungsten filament which results in vaporized tungsten being re-deposited on the filament as the lamp is operated. This increases the longevity of the lamp and allows it to run at higher temperatures, which in turn improves the color quality and overall lumen output of the bulb. However, halogen bulbs are as we mentioned, at their core a basic incandescent design, and like all incandescent bulbs are highly inefficient and relatively short lived. Some specs for a typical 50 watt halogen bulb commonly used on boats are listed below.
17-20 lumens per watt output.
2800-3400 Kelvin color temperature.
Lamp life 1700 - 2500 hrs.
Color rendering index 100.
1,500 to 2,000 hour operating life.
Very hot operating temperature.
Fragile wire filament can break under abusive conditions.
HID-Metal Halide-
HID bulbs produce light differently from halogen or LED light sources and represent some of the most powerful types of lighting available. Most HID bulbs used onboard boats are of the metal halide variety, which produces high output combined with good color quality and good longevity. HID lights are more commonly used in spotlights due to their intense output, but also see significant use in spreader applications where larger amounts of deck area need to be covered with substantially high lumen levels. HID lights produce light by creating an arc within a glass bulb that ignites gases and metallic salts to create a plasma ignition, in turn creating intense light output. HID lights are very efficient, have good longevity, and like halogen lamps produce large amounts of heat. For applications requiring the most powerful light output possible, HID systems are at the top of the list. The following are some basic performance specs for a typical 50 watt HID bulb.
Lamp life 5,000 - 20,000 hrs (varies greatly according to wattage).
2700K to 20,000 Kelvin color temperature.
75-95 Color rendering index.
Very hot operating temperature.
Erratic operation when bulb nears end of life rating.
Slow warmup, slow hot restart.
Requires ballast assembly for operaton.
Solid State Lighting- LEDs-
LEDs represent the newest generation of boat lighting technology and provide an excellent alternative to halogen and metal halide lamps. LEDs also produce light much differently than halogen or HID bulbs. LEDs consist of thin layers of semi conducting material coated with materials such as phosphorus which is affixed to a metal base and fed current through two contacts. When electrical current is passed through an LED, a process called electroluminescence takes place where in electrons pass through the semiconducting material and as they do they eventually release some energy in the form of photons, or visible light. This process is very efficient, produces low amounts of heat as compared to the amount of light produced, and works natively with direct current rather than alternating current.
Although LEDs do produce far less heat than incandescent or HID lamps, the LED chip itself is more sensitive to high heat levels, and it is possible for too much heat buildup to damage the LED and shorten its operating life if not dealt with. Because of this most manufacturers design LED fixtures with built in heat sinks, represented by finned housing designs which work to efficiently dissipate heat and maintain maximum performance. This heat management issue and heat management solution is why most LED fixtures look so different from standard lamps and is the leading source of trouble with LEDs, but these days most manufacturers of quality LEDs have produced designs which effectively reduce the issue to a minor one. The following are some basic specs for an LED equivalent to 50 watt halogen lamps.
60-100 lumens per watt output.
Lamp life 20,000 - 100,000 hrs.
2,700 to 7,000 Kelvin color temperature.
60-90 Color rendering index.
Very cool operating temperature.
Instant on, no warmup.
Voltage sensitive and requires additional voltage managing circuitry.
No glass, no filament, highly durable.
If we look at these basic specifications we can easily see why LEDs are now so popular with boaters. Highly efficient, cool running, and extremely long lived, LEDs represent an almost tailor made lighting solution for boat illumination. LEDs can easily replace halogen lamps for almost any type of onboard installation, and their small size and cool operation means you can install them in cabins without the need for bulky fixtures or worries about potential fire hazards. Although LEDs don't as of yet have to intense output of HID lamps, they still provide comparable output that is quite effective when used in applications requiring significant beam reach or coverage of large areas. LEDs don't need any warmup time to reach full operating output, and since they are solid state can handle the vibrations and impacts that come with running through rough seas.

Let's Resolve the Frequent Troubles of LCD Monitor Ourselves

No display or white screen:
If this is a new install make sure the refresh rate is not set too high. If you installed a new video card in your system make sure the refresh rate is not set too high. Outside a native mode graphics will be darker, fine lines and text will be thicker. Native mode for 15" TFT panels is 1024x768, 17" and 19" TFT panels are 1280x1024. Most games can be configured to run at 1024x768 which should produce clean graphics.
Thick text:
As described above, TFT LCD monitors perform best in their native modes. Other modes can be used however the reproduction of text will vary in thickness depending on the mode the monitor is running in. Best text reproduction is view in the monitors native mode.

Wavy lines on the screen:
In some instances you may encounter wavy lines on the screen. These are usually 1/4" thick and move in a vertical motion. This is caused by a noisy electrical feed from a wall outlet. If you change your vertical refresh rate under display properties to 75Hz this effect should disappear.
Small dot on screen:
TFT panels by their very nature are difficult to manufacture. What that means is a 15" LCD display can have up to about 6-10 broken pixels and still be considered "acceptable". This is common to ALL TFT screens and is not considered a defect by the screen manufacturer.
Dark areas:
Retail TFT LCD monitor products employ the use of a single TFT backlight. This backlight is responsible to deliver full edge to edge brightness across the screen. A: This happens when the resolution used by the add-on monitor is larger than the resolution used by the primary monitor. New technology makes working in the dark less problematic. LED headlamps are lighting the way for the heroes of our cities. Firefighters and policemen favor LED headlamps because: 1) beams can be pointed in the direction of need, 2) can be adjusted by elastic headbands, 3) are water resistant, 4) allow for hands-free movement and searching, and 6) can be mounted on hard hats.
LED headlamps come in levels of illumination and most often offer the wearer at least three levels of light. These headlamps are powered by batteries ranging from 3 to 6 AAA batteries as a well as AA batteries. LED headlamps range from 18 to 60 Lumens and are capable of working in atmospheres that are filled with dangerous toxins, gasses and vapors. LED lamps vary in the number of hours they run. However, in comparison to standard headlamps, they can run up to hundreds of hours longer because of the efficiency of LED light bulbs. They also vary on the brightness of the light they emit as well as whether the light emitted has a spot or flood focus.
When considering the times a firefighter or policeman is put into danger it is no wonder they favor LED headlamps. LED lamps allow firefighters and policemen to do what they do best - help citizens who are in danger from fires, criminal activity, being lost and in need of rescue etc. LED headlamps help the men and women who use them save lives and protect property.

HDMI and Display Port, Unique Properties Of The Most Common Video Sockets

A great range to choose from but which is the best for you.
At the moment the HDMI socket appears to be the most popular. However the barely heard of "Display Port" or "DP" is very much the new kid on the block and expected to give HDMI sockets some serious competition in the years to come.
Early video graphics sockets / plugs.
VGA or D-Sub as it is also known has been around almost from the inception of PC's and still very much in use today.
The most common video socket types:
USB - Universal Serial Bus - as in the name it has Universal applications, and can be used to provide graphics by means of a variety of adaptors.
VGA and SVGA- Video Graphics Array or D-Sub (Sub-miniature) - Video
RCA-Composite Video - Yellow, with White and Red for Audio
DVI -Digital Video Interface, 6 Variety's - both Analog and Digital Video
HDMI -19 pin High Definition Media Interface - Video, Audio, and, Ethernet. Attracts a royalty between 4 and 15 cents for each socket that the manufactures use in their equipment.
DP - Display Port - 20 pin High Quality Video, no Audio or Ethernet as yet. This is expected to be upgraded in the coming years. Currently royalty free. Can power 120HZ equipment
Versions and sizes:
To confuse you even more all come in a range of shapes and sizes along with a number of different versions.
What do VGA, DVI, and HDMI and DP have in common?
They all share some compatibility with each other by the use of a variety of adaptors as is the old yellow video and super video sockets.
USB:
There are adaptors that allow a USB plug to be used as a composite yellow video along with red white audio sockets. Just how efficient they are is another question.
The "Display Port" or "DP" is very much the new kid on the block.
In general the DP produces a slightly better video signal than the HDMI. If the hardware you are interested in purchasing does not have a HDMI, or DP of some description then think very seriously before you finalize you purchase or you could be wasting your money. You can get adaptors to go from Display Port to HDMI without any significant video loss, but if you try to go from 19Pin HDMI to 20Pin DP you may be out of luck depending on the equipment, I tried this with two different types of hardware and had no success at all.

All new electronic equipment should have at least two of the following sockets, if not all - USB, HDMI, DVI and a DP of some description.
Pros:
The HDMI is currently the winner with its latest 1.4 version as it has Video, Audio and Ethernet all rolled up in one simple cable.
Cons:
Avoid using adaptors where possible, they are commonly the source of signal loss.
Conclusion:
Don't throw out your old equipment because it has a VGA or old style yellow video socket. If you are about to purchase new expensive hardware such as a TV, PC monitor or Graphics Card keep a look out for the product that boasts a HDMI and a humble DP socket, both will come in handy down the track.
If retail sales staff have not heard of a Display Port or DP, then you can be confident that you know much more than them, which is very often the case.

HDMI Cable - The Future Of The HDMI Cable And The HD Display

If you have been alive for the last decade then you have noticed. The HD television has come around to reign supreme and will do so until the 3D television replaces it. TVs used to be this huge box that was heavy and difficult to move. The screen was convex and the picture was grainy. If you were too close to the screen you wouldn't be able to see a clear image. Now, the television is thin and flat. It has a crystal clear picture. You feel let down with the old technology. You judge a hotel's efficacy on the quality of its television screen when you check into your room. It is not just the television that has evolved. The cord, in this case the HDMI cable, has evolved too.
Each of these HDMI cables is amazing in itself. Yes, they can be expensive, but that little cord carries a wealth of information. Just look into the female end of the HDMI cable and see all the little male pins. You'll notice at least 19 pins around the mouth and each of these individual pins carries different types of information, simultaneously, to the television, monitor or projector. Many of the pins carry a complex amount of data but a few of them are remarkable. One of them is an Ethernet cable that is capable of carrying information from the web to the display. Another pin is just a clock to keep track of the time and yet another is something called a data shield. All of these pins are integral in delivering a sharp HD image from your capable device to the appropriate display.
An HDMI cable can come in many different sizes and formats. These different types of cords are usually made to accommodate the device rather than the display. The display usually accepts the standard sized end of the cord, while the device can have different size male ends. You are most likely going to see a smaller end for something like an HD digital video camera. Although, the most popular device, a DVD or Blu Ray player, will most likely have a standard sized end. Either way, the HDMI cable will deliver all the information needed to display a crisp HD image on the display. Even the smaller end of the cord will be capable of carrying that information. The pins are just compressed into a smaller space.

Be Technology Smart - Go for FTA or Android!

We all pay monthly bills for watching our favorite TV channels (barring a few ones which are free, and which we actually don't watch). But there are some of us who are different from the rest, some of us who think smartly, know about their surroundings and are alert about what is going on in the market, and beneath it. Wink.
Now, if you are one of those smart people out there, you would have definitely heard of the FTA or the Free To Air Services. Did it come across to any of us that if we can have an equipment (usually in the form of a box) to listen to the popular radio channels, then, why can't we have a similar equipment to air TV channels. In both the scenarios, we don't pay any monthly subscription and this additionally saves our time cost, energy cost and psychic costs besides the monetary costs. The FTA is available through satellite and one can view hundreds of channels depending on the geographical area. But again, you can't have everything everywhere, and unfortunately these services are limited to a few regions only - North America enjoys these services the most, along with Australia, New Zealand etc.
Now, coming to the some prerequisites before we enjoy the FTA or FTV (Free To View) Services. It is common sense that Free to Air won't just miraculously come out from the air to our television sets. So, we need equipment - that is, a receiver, also known as a FTA receiver box. With an initial investment, you can save so many dollars! In fact, most of these receivers come with additional features such as USB ports, zoom in and out, auto program search, and many other technical features. Brands such as i-link 9000 and cnx nano 2 are commonplace names for FTA receivers. There are many variations and latest versions of the ilink 9000 as well as Conaxsat (cnx nano 2).
For all the technology lovers (especially the younger generation), another trend is catching up - the use of the Tablet PC for multiple usages such as watching TV, playing games, social networking, work and lots more. Amongst the younger and tech savvy audiences, the Android tablet is catching up in a big way.
